What is Yellow Fever: Yellow fever is a serious disease caused by the yellow fever virus.  Most people infected with yellow fever virus do not get sick or have only mild symptoms. People who do get sick will start having symptoms (e.g., fever, chills, headache, backache, and muscle aches) 3–6 days after they are infected. About 12% of people who have symptoms go on to develop serious illness: jaundice, bleeding, shock, organ failure, and sometimes death.

Yellow Fever Vaccination: Most countries require their citizens to be vaccinated against yellow fever if returning from other countries considered at risk for Risk of Yellow Fever Transmission.

Colombia is considered a Yellow Fever risk country.  Therefore, MOST people will be required to get a Yellow Fever vaccination BEFORE entering Colombia. Yellow Fever vaccinations are not considered valid until after 10 days from receiving the vaccine so you should plan to obtain a vaccination at least 10 days before traveling to Colombia.

You do not require a Yellow Fever vaccine to enter Colombia, but your home country (like most countries) will require you to be fully vaccinated when you re-enter.

Where to get a Yellow Fever Vaccination:   Check with your government’s health ministry to find out which local hospitals carry the yellow fever vaccine.  In some countries, yellow fever vaccines can also be received at the nearest Red Cross Society.
